Our featured speaker for the March "Second Saturday" talk at SERC's Moore Auditorium has had to cancel. So ... we will be canceling the event this month. (This is the first time we have had to do that in more than a year!)
We will be back to our regular program in April. Our current (though tentative) plan is to have Dr. Mark McCollough of the US Fish and Wildlife Service come talk to us about the state of the Eastern Cougar in Maine.

"If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else." -- Yogi Berra
Where are we headed with managing protected areas? Traditionally, toward protecting or restoring "naturalness." Can we do that anymore? That was a question put before scientists at last week's George Wright Society conference in Portland, Oregon. For some thoughts about that discussion and about what it has to do with science education, see Bill Zoellick's blog posting titled Beyond Naturalness.

Bill Zoellick hosts a Twitter page that will provide you with moment-to-moment updates about thinking and happenings related to parks, science, and education. You can see the most recent postings over on the right side of the Acadia Partners homepage. This morning (Portland, Oregon time) the twittering was all about a presentation at the George Wright Society conference that was about the National Parks and native American tribes.

Shortly after the Navy turned its base at Schoodic Point over to the National Park Service, just as SERC was moving from idea to reality, Ed Pontbriand, his wife Kelly, daughter Katie, and a couple of dogs moved on the SERC campus to begin managing the transition. Ever since that time Ed has been working with the community, recruiting volunteers, heading up law enforcement, and -- in dozens of other ways -- serving as the face of SERC and the Park Service in the Schoodic community and for visitors to SERC. In the intervening six years SERC has grown from concept to year-around operation that hosts thousands of people each year in teacher workshops, educational experiences for students, meetings, training sessions, and community events. One sign of that growth is that we have recently welcomed June Devisfruto as the new SERC Coordinator, overseeing park activity here at SERC.
Starting next week, Ed will be taking on a new role as a supervisory law enforcement park ranger over on Mount Desert Island. But, before he goes, he will join us this coming Saturday, February 14 at 7 PM at the regular "Second Saturday" series in the Moore Auditorium at SERC to share a slide show of the activities over the past years and to reminisce.

Bill has returned to writing and ruminating about what we do here at Acadia Partners -- on a brand new blog page. The "blog" banner ad and menu on our home page now take you to the new writings. The old blogs are still around too -- there is a link on the new site to take you to them.
We will see how the writing goes over time -- the intent is to spend a lot more time sharing what we learn from our work and research in the schools as we create new ways to connect the science at Acadia with science instruction in schools.
